Buju is a fast rising Nigerian singer, songwriter, producer, recording artist, performer, also known as BujuToYourEars.

Early Life

Buju started writing music when he was in junior secondary school. At the time, he called himself Drizzle but later changed his stage name to Buju.

He started out rapping and ended up joining the choir. He began performing solo at valedictory services and carried his passion to the university with time. For a while, he stopped playing music, as he kept comparing himself to other talented people and felt that they were better than him. He refined his style and got inspired by Burna Boy, Buju Banton, Damian Marley, and J Hus

Born, Daniel Benson, popularly known as Buju or BujuToYourEars was born into a middle class family in Lagos State.

Although he’s from Awka Ibom state, Buju lived with his mother in Gbagada before moving to Mowe, Ogun State. Buju is a name for Jamaican bread and also a name mothers call their chubby kids. Due to his chubby stature, BujuToYourEars decided to go by the stage name.

In February 2018, Buju released his first song “Catch a Vibe”. Later, he dropped his second song “A Day in Lagos “ which gave him some level of recognition on Soundcloud and Twitter.

Family

Buju lost his beloved mother at an early age to cancer after battling with the disease for years.

How his Music Career started

He listened to Burna Boy a lot in the past, and eventually, he got a chance to meet him in person and collaborate with him. Together, they worked on the remix of “L’Enu”. Another famous artist that Buju has worked with is Zlatan. At first, he did not believe he could secure such a music giant for one of his songs, but his friends kept pushing him to reach out to him. Zlatan noticed the young talent and decided to collaborate with him. They created “Spiritual”, an incredibly successful hit and went viral on multiple streaming platforms.

He then proceeded to Babcock for his bachelor’s degree in Theater art from Babcock University.

  • Buju is a viral sensation, gradually establishing himself as a promising Nigerian music star.
  • On April 16, 2020, Burna Boy’s record label, Spaceship Records, announced the signing of Buju, making him the third act to be signed to the label after Burna Boy and Burna Boy’s sister Nissi Ogulu.
  • In November 2021, the Afropop artist disclosed he had refused to extend his contract with Burna Boy’s Spaceship Collective. He was signed to record label in 2020 before he released Lenu remix with Burna Boy. He confirmed that Burna Boy had consented to his decision.
  • Buju made his first appearance on stage at the prestigious O2 Arena, where Wizkid kicked off the three-day concert. The performance took place on Sunday, November 28th, 2021.

Controversy

In 2021, Fast-rising afrobeats singer Buju is in the middle of a domestic violence scandal, going by reports. A medical doctor, Dr Amira is accusing the singer of infidelity, manipulation, and domestic abuse.

the doctor took to her Instagram to bare it all, writing she’s to put a stop to his abusive pattern. According to Dr Amira, she and Buju —- currently signed to Burna Boy’s Spaceship label— have been dating for 1 year and four months.

She said during this time, she fed and clothed him but was paid back with lies, cheating, and physical assault.

“I honestly loved him to the extent that I paid for most of the clothes he wears and the food he eats through his manager, Tomiwa Agbaje, as his label doesn’t fund him. But what do I get in return, he cheats on me and assaults me at the slightest provocation.” she wrote.
