Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a £175 million-a-year contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr after leaving Manchester United in November.
After leaving United in the wake of his controversial and damaging interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo, 37, remained a free agent for over a month.
According to reports, Ronaldo’s contract with the Saudi’s club will last for seven years. The Portuguese superstar is expected to play before accepting an ambassadorial position, and his salary would rise with time.
His choice to relocate to Saudi Arabia basically puts an end to his distinguished career in Europe. It is believed that Ronaldo had hoped to join a Champions League team, but that failed to happen.
According to reports, one of his duties as an ambassador will be to support Saudi Arabia’s joint candidacy with Egypt and Greece to host the 2030 World Cup.
He joins Lionel Messi in accepting a promotional job with the Gulf country, which has come under fire for its record on human rights issues as well as crackdowns on those who support women’s rights, identify as LGBTQ+, or speak out against Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s leadership.
