Luis Suarez, a striker from Uruguay, has signed a free transfer agreement to play for Brazilian Serie A team Gremio through the end of 2024.
Luis Suarez reportedly turned down offers from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer. Afterward, he agreed to settle with Gremio, a Brazilian top-flight team.
The club, which is headquartered in Porto Alegre, Brazil, introduced their new player on Twitter, with the 35-year-old appearing in a brief introductory video next to the No. 9 jersey.
The seventh club of Suarez’s prominent career is Gremio. His most prosperous period in Europe was when he played for Barcelona, where he was a member of the well-known MSN forward line with Lionel Messi and Neymar.
With the combination of the elite footballers, Suarez won four La Liga championships and a Champions League.
Suarez began his professional career with the Uruguayan club Nacional, and since his return to the team in July 2022, he has scored eight goals in 14 league appearances. However, his temporary spell ran out, which is why he moved to Gremio.
The seasoned player spent 16 years playing club football in Europe, first with the Dutch teams Groningen and Ajax, before joining Liverpool in 2011.
Suarez spent three years at Liverpool before moving to Barcelona for six seasons before spending two more seasons at La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.
During his second spell with Nacional, the Uruguayan striker helped the team to win the Uruguayan championship. He scored eight goals in 16 games before he left the club.
Uruguay was eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar because the striker did not score in any of his three appearances for his nation.
The striker, who leads Uruguay in goals scored on the international arena, was unable to prevent his team from being eliminated from the just concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage after finishing behind Group H winners Portugal and runners-up South Korea, who outscored the South Americans in goals scored.
Renato Gaucho, Suarez’s new manager, will be looking to Suarez for big things after the club was relegated to the Brazilian second level last season.
Suarez had earlier been reported by reporters that he chose Gremio over Cruz Aazul of Mexico in a two-year deal.
In addition, he declined possibilities from the MLS in America and lucrative pay cheques from some teams in Saudi Arabia.
Lucas Leiva, a former Liverpool star who was forced to end his football career permanently after a heart condition was discovered during routine preseason testing, will join the Gremio team where he previously played.
What’s next for Luis Suarez?
The opening match of the season for Gremio is scheduled for January 21 versus Caxias. Suarez will want to leave his mark in a new nation and take his new team up the league.
