The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) returned for the 2023/24 season on Matchday 1 this weekend, with Shooting Stars and Sunshine claiming victories against Plateau Utd and Kano Pillars respectively.
Shooting Stars secured a 2-1 victory over Plateau United at Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan with goals from Oke Kayode and Anayor Ogbonna.
Meanwhile, at the Akure Stadium, Sunshine beat newly promoted Kano Pillars 1-0, courtesy of a first-half goal from Emmanuel Oguagu.
Oguagu scored the gameβs only goal in the 9th minute when he finished off a good team move with a low shot into the bottom corner.
The match between Bayelsa United and Akwa United was the most exciting match of the weekend, which ended 5-3 in favour of the Yenagoa-based club.
Heartland held with Lobi Stars as Abia Warriors, Rangers, and Kastina United all won.
NPFL debutant Sporting Lagos FC will face Gombe United at 4 pm today at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Enyimba, Rivers United, and Bendel Insurance were unable to play this weekend due to continental cup participation.
