Man City vs Atletico Madrid’s match started with full attacking forces. Ruben Dias looks like everyone else on the pitch is a lot fresher – principally because they are. He was ever present as City roared to the Treble and will be key in the upcoming season but it seems 90 minutes in these conditions is beyond even him.
Atletico break thanks to a great ball from the goalkeeper into the City half. The cross comes to Memphis Depay who shoots straight at Stefan Ortega. He fires the rebound over the bar. If the initial shot was anywhere else on target, it would have been 2-0.
Not for the first time in the last few minutes, Ruben Dias gives the ball away in a dangerous area. Atletico try and work a shooting opportunity in the box, and City are thankful for Joao Cancelo for a well-timed interception. He then loses the ball and Atletico come again. The changes have improved Atletico and made City more disjointed and sloppy. Man City look to have lost a little bit of edge with those substitutions, understandably now there is now a lot more youth on the pitch.

Joao Cancelo played that lovely ball for McAtee and Alvarez will be looking to show he can do those with Haaland off the pitch. Angel Correa colelcts a good Atletico break in his strde and tries to readjust his feet to get a shot away. He pokes at it and the ball does wide. Then Ruben Dias is robbed to present Pablo Barrios a chance to shoot, but Ortega stands firm.
Rico Lewis is next to Mateo Kovacic in midfield, with Kalvin Phillips sitting. Sergio Gomez is getting forward a lot from left-back, allowing James McAtee to come inside wherever possible. Oscar Bobb is hugging the right wing, while Julian Alvarez has moved into the centre. Atletico are about to make ten changes, swapping their entire outfield side. Saul Niguez, Yannick Carrasco and Memphis Depay are among them.
