The 2022 UEFA Super Cup gets set to open the major European club calendar as Champions League winners Real Madrid match up against Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt.
The match is an intriguing affair, as Los Blancos, one of Europe’s club giants, take on an enigmatic German opponent.
Eintracht Frankfurt were a fascinating follow last season. The German side struggled at times in Bundesliga play last season, evident again in the 6-1 pounding at the hands of Bayern Munich over the past weekend to open the German top flight season. Yet the peaks and valleys of league play never seemed to faze the club in European competition, as it charged through the likes of Barcelona, West Ham, and Rangers in last season’s Europa League to ultimately hoist the trophy.
Madrid, meanwhile, have yet to open La Liga play and experienced mixed results in preseason with a 2-2 draw against Club America and a 1-0 loss to rivals Barcelona. The 2-0 win over Juventus to close out their tuneup slate will offer hope that Carlo Ancelotti’s club is rebuilding fitness and form as the new season approaches.
