Tottenham sack acting head coach Stellini following 6-1 defeat against Newcastle

  • Tottenham have sacked acting head coach Cristian Stellini following Sunday’s embarrassing loss at Newcastle.

Spurs were thumped 6-1 at St James Park at the weekend to leave the club’s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

And chairman Daniel Levy has decided his position is untenable following talks earlier today.

Stellini, who was Antonio Conte’s No 2, was placed in temporary charge of the team after the Italian’s departure last month.

But Stellini has joined Conte in having left the club.

Ryan Mason, who is a coach under Stellini, is understood to have significant support of Spurs players to take the team until the end of the season.

Spurs were left humiliated at Newcastle on Sunday after a performance that Stellini described as the ‘worst’ he has ever seen.

There were concerns behind the scenes that little has changed under Stellini given his links to Conte and that the team could do with a completely fresh approach.

Mason has been unable to completely stamp his authority on the team since Conte’s departure given he is an assistant.

But the former Tottenham player is well-placed to take charge of the team given he has had the role as caretaker boss in the past.
