Javier Mascherano’s team dominated the early stages and took the lead after 17 minutes when Alejo Veliz powered a brilliant header into the top corner.
They failed to take advantage of a number of first have opportunities but were given a boost when Guatemala’s Carlos Santos was dismissed for a second yellow early in the second half.
