It’s mission accomplished for Michael Carrick this season with Champions League football secured but he will still want to finish the campaign strongly to boost his chances of holding onto the Manchester United job. Last weekend’s rousing 3-2 win at home to old rivals Liverpool guaranteed a top-five finish, so the pressure is off as Carrick takes his side to Sunderland.
The former Old Trafford midfielder has done a sterling job since taking the reins from Ruben Amorim, losing just two of his 14 games as interim manager. During that run, Carrick’s side have beaten Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool so it would be a surprise if he failed to get the gig full-time.
